How Your Fiber Is Processed
Each fleece is processed individually and treated gently without use of harsh soaps and high-speed machines. Blending of fiber types and colors can be done to your specifications. Attention to detail is given throughout process with minimal fiber loss. Fiber processed in order received and requires 1-2 weeks to process one show fleece into unique handcrafted yarn.
Evaluation: All incoming fiber is weighed and evaluated for vegetation, fiber strength, staple length, and second cuts. Fleece should be well skirted before sending (already prepared for fleece show and then thoroughly skirted again before sending). Fleece with heavy vegetation, mold or insect contamination will not be processed.
Quick Skirt: Individual locks of fiber are pulled apart to help obtain cleaner fiber when washed. This step is not a substitute for carefully skirting your fleece.
Washing: All fiber is washed using combination of utility sink and washing machine’s spin cycle to extract water. Washing will NOT remove vegetation.
Picking: Fiber is picked in small batches using a Patrick Green Picker to open the locks of fiber prior to carding.
Carding: Patrick Green Supercard is used to align fibers producing lofty, easy to spin roving and batts. Roving is loosely laid into bags for continuous spinning or rolled into individual balls for sale. Batt size is approximately 12” x 36”.
Spinning: Fiber is spun into 2-ply yarn, washed to set twist and then dried. If specified, each skein/roving/batts is weighed and wrapped ready for sale. All you have to do is label with your farm info!
